Arizona’s crypto ATM consumer protection law is producing tangible results less than a year after taking effect. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office announced that 35 victims of cryptocurrency ATM scams have recovered full refunds totaling $171,332, highlighting one of the first state-level frameworks in the U.S. designed specifically to combat crypto kiosk fraud.
Arizona’s Crypto ATM Refund Program Returns Thousands to Victims
Attorney General Kris Mayes said the refunds were made possible through Arizona’s Cryptocurrency Kiosk License Fraud Prevention law, which became effective on September 26, 2025.
As per the law, crypto ATM or kiosk operators are supposed to give instantfuls and refund the carried fee also if the customer reports any fraudulent transactions within 30 days of the transaction. To address the concerns, victims should contact either the Attorneys General’s Office or the local Police/PWSS first to file a complaint in advance of the deadline.
The authorities stress that it is vitally important to get the timing right. Victims might not be eligible for reimbursement unless they report on time, even if it is proven later that it was fraud.
The Attorney General’s Office urged victims to maintain receipts from the transactions and record aspects including details on the amount of the transaction(s), kiosk location, dates and a description of how the scammers were contacted.

How Scammers Use Crypto ATMs
The rise of crypto kiosks has made them a target for fraud in recent years, as transactions can be completed quickly, are non-refundable, and are hard to track.
Oftentimes, the caller is pretending to be a government official, a bank, a tech support firm, or law enforcement agencies. Victims are forced to make cash injections to the crypto ATM and to bitcoin or other digital wallets that are victims to the criminals.
Arizona authorities reiterated a warning that was widely noted to all transactions on legitimate businesses and government agencies not demand cryptocurrency ATM payments.
New Rules Add Extra Layers of Protection
